Hello, My name is Lucas Gearhart and I am currently the Digital Media teacher in the Digital Arts Pathways at Durham School of the Arts. DSA is a wonderful school and I have enjoyed teaching all of my students the Adobe content as well as Art and Design concepts.
In 2006 I completed my Batchelor of Science degree in Art Education from Buffalo State College in New York. That summer I moved across the country with my girlfriend and taught at Advanced Technologies Academy High School in Las Vegas for 12 years. I taught classes in the Graphic Design Program Area and Traditional Art and Drawing Areas where students learned about Adobe software and traditional mediums. I attained my Masters Degree in Illustration with a concentration of Illustration for the Film and Game Industry form the Academy of Art in San Fransisco CA. I also just finalized the last component for my National Board Teaching Certification so I will be anticipating my scores in December.
Throughout living life in Vegas, my girlfriend became my wife, we now have three kids, 2 dogs, 2 ferrets, and 3 chickens. Our families live on the East coast of the country so we decided that we would move back across the country and we landed in Durham, NC. I feel blessed to have this teaching position at DSA and work with an amazing staff and teach wonderful students. Last school year was my first year at DSA and it truly was a great year, but a very unexpected year having to switch to teaching remotely due to the Covid 19 Pandemic. We all made it work and adapted well given the circumstances. The classes I teach at DSA are all of the Adobe classes which include Adobe Visual, Video, Digital, and Advanced Studies. The Adobe content is very similar to what I was teaching in Vegas so the transition has been great. I very much look forward to this new school year.
I live and breath creative endeavors. I love to draw and paint traditionally with makers, pens, pencils, oil paints, gouache, canvas, ink, as well digitally create art through digital paintings in Photoshop or other software. I love the idea of fusing traditional media with the digital world so I have experimented a lot with this type of art, especially in the concept art realm. I also enjoy music and playing my guitar. I had played in many worship bands over the years and even a couple bands back in the day. I often spend time hanging out with my family and we like to go on adventures; sometimes planned, sometimes spontaneous. We like how close the beach is now, only a couple hours away so we have already had many beach trips this first year.
